What Is The Real Weight Loss Solution?
January 27, 2012
Much of the weight loss industry likes to focus on overweight Americans. Yes, we are indeed “cash pigs” for those who sell these products and services. However, a good part of the world is also in a heavyweight (no pun intended) predicament.
Close to half of the world’s adults are overweight – this, according to some recent studies. People who are overweight or obese have greater odds of developing diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses. Overweight rhymes (sort of) with early grave – true enough, most overweight people die sooner than average-sized people.
Many overweight people want to lose weight to improve their health and their appearance. Because so many people want to lose weight, there are many commercial weight loss programs on the market. Many of these highly in-demand products cost a pretty penny. And many of these products, unfortunately, are pretty useless.
Millions of men and women from industrialized countries enroll every year in different kinds of commercial weight loss programs. As there is a shortage of information on these programs, obese individuals and the medical facilities who assist them do not quite know what to do regarding the programs in question. Worse, doctors and their obese patients find themselves stupefied when asked whether they do know about how safe or effective these programs are.
There have been very few completely reliable studies that can corroborate the effectiveness, or lack thereof, of weight loss programs. A lot of these studies lean towards the positive side of things, because they do not equate the numerous individuals who stop attending or supporting the programs. There is a dearth of evidence that can make one surmise that these commercial weight loss programs are effective – or not. Patients considering the use of commercial weight loss programs should realize that these programs have not been carefully studied.
Do these weight loss programs work or not? Some do in the short term but long term results are doubtful.
The real effective way to lose weight is just what we all want to ignore: a behavioral change diligently over time.
A constant and consistent change in behavior and a commitment to exercise is everything everybody needs to ensure permanent weight loss. There is no magic potion, pill or program. Change behavior from what you eat to how you eat it, how much you eat and when is the key to long term, successful wight loss.
It comes down to more calories used each day, called “burning calories,” than taking in, called “eating.”
If you are currently planning to go on a “miracle” weight loss program, then HOLD IT RIGHT THERE, PARTNER! Use a smart yet systematic approach to behavior modification. Okay, so the results may not be as “pronto” as you would hope, but if you want permanent weight loss, this is the ONLY way to do it!
